A Dutch silver beaker by Homme Dirks Goltsma

conical cup on circular base, richly engraved with three oval medallions depicting Faith and Hope in between an oval with an empty double coat of arms, the lower part engraved with three ships at sea, the base with inscription: "Teicke Tietes 1682"

Homme Dirks Goltsma (Voet 142) was born in Franeker, he became a master in Leeuwarden in 1649. Between 1649 and 1670 he had seven apprentices. He was also an alderman in 1671-1672. Homme Dirks died in 1672. Just like this beaker, several other silver pieces are known with the master's mark of Homme Dirks (whether or not overstruck with another master's mark) that bear a different townmark together with the year letter K for 1682. It is suspected that silver pieces were purchased from his estate by his students who later sold them and provided them with a different townmark and year letter. See: E. Voet, Brands of Frisian Gold and Silversmiths, The Hague, 1974, p. 177-178.
