A rare European lacquer chest
A very unusual European wooden lacquer rectangular chest with flat hinged lid and gilt bronze mounts. Decorated overall in pictorial-style in gold and cinnabar on a black background.
Partially in relief with framed panels of a pond, flowering plants, waterplants and other brushwood, butterflies and three geeze standing on a riverbank amongst flowering plants and shrubs on the left, in the middle a raptor and on the right two flying ducks. The cinnabar flowers catch the eye. The front and sides are decorated with a kind of pheasants, butterflies and flowering plants and shrubs of which the red lacquer attracts attention, also in framed panels. The rims decorated with scrolling foliage. Engraved gilt-bronze mounts.
