Malagan-statue from Papua New Guinea by Jan Sluijters ('s Hertogenbosch 1881 - 1957 Amsterdam)
Sluijters was a leading pioneer of various post-impressionist movements in The Netherlands. He experimented with several styles, including fauvism and cubism, finally setting on a colorful expressionism. His paintings feature nude studies, portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. There is a closely related painting known depicting the same statue within a still-life also painted by Jan Sluijters circa 1935.
