A rare Dutch lacquer table secretaire by Adrianus Apol (1780-Breda-1862)
The hinged fallfront enclosing an interior with pigeonholes and drawers, and secret drawers, is decorated with a landscape of figures and pagodes within a cartouche surrounded by sprays of flowers, which rests on two pull out supports. The base with one drawer decorated with flowers, on clawfeet.
Adrianus Apol, a "peinturier" painter of lacquer and merchant from Breda (in the south of the Netherlanlds), decorated this table-secretaire in the style of Chinese and Japanese lacquerwork. He imitated not only the lacquer work, but also the style of painting and the marquetery with mother-of-pearl.
